Dowry System in Modern India

Marriage or Trade?

One of the most worst social evil of our society is the dowry system. It is quite awful to know, that even in this 21st century this evil is still prevailing in many parts of India and has already cost lives of many women.
Marriage, which is the most beautiful and sacred bond between two loved ones with a commitment of making it stronger overtime. The majority of marriages in India are arranged marriages which happen to be on the consent of both the families. But in some families in India these mutual consents often involve exchange of money and valuable items with the bride.

How this trade is done?
  • The groom's family demands valuable gifts and presents from the other side on all the wedding functions to show their class in the society.
  • Heavy jewelry and car is gifted to the bridegroom on the wedding day.
  • The bride's family is asked to pay majority or all the expenses the wedding.
  • The bride is expected to come in her new home with ancestral jewelry and her own cash.
Failing to do any of the above may result in broken marriage or mental or physical harassment.

Consequences of Dowry System

1. Female Infanticide : The parents start saving money for their daughter's marriage since her birth, which puts a lot of burden on them. Hence another social evil takes birth i.e Female Infanticide. Couples or families determine the sex of the fetus and kill it if found a girl. Lower sex ratio between the age group of 0-7 is the consequence of such ill minded thinking of people.

2. Domestic Violence : Failing to satisfy the greed of the husband and it's family, gives rise to both physical and mental torture of the woman. She is beaten up by the family and are treated as a slave.

3. Dowry Death : Dowry deaths are those deaths in which bride either commits suicide or is being murdered up by husband or his family in the wake of insufficient dowry. These deaths have risen over the past decade due to lack of education and awareness among the women about the Protection of Woman Against Domestic Violence Law, 2005 and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Hence it can also be said that dowry system is the mother of many more social evils.
Thus the act which started as a token of love to the bridegroom is now the dark face of our society. Though there are many laws regarding both woman safety and dowry prohibition but lack of awareness and tolerating the cruelty has given more power to the offenders. Hence there is a need for proper education to people of all age groups regarding the laws by holding up social awareness campaigns and seminars.
It is the right education which has the power to eradicate all evils of the our society.

Cutting Nails at Night As I already discussed about it earlier, so why is this still said not to cut nails at night. This myth belongs to that times when we used lamps or candles to lighten up our house at night and at that time we didn’t have nail cutters to cut our nails. Sharp objects like blades/knives or stones were used to cut. Such sharp objects can cause serious injuries if used in low visibility such at night, therefore it was advised not to cut at night. And what about doing it inside the house? The cut nails can prick into someone’s foot and can cause pain. Offering prayers to some plants In India we conside...

Saving the Unreserved - Reservation System

The joint entrance examination committee recently announced the jee main scores and ranks along with the announcement of JEE advance Cutoff marks. With a lot anticipation among children to get admissions in the top institutes, this year’s cut off was pretty low as compared to last year’s. While the general’s cut off dropped to 81 from 100 last year’s while it dropped to 49 from 70 ,and 32 from 52, and 27 from 48 for Scheduled Caste , Scheduled Tribe respectively. This year’s cut off brought happiness to students and their parents due to low cutoff. But this maybe an indicating warning about the upcoming problem. Many general category students may have been in good or better colleges if there were no reservations. As these students are exposed to this reservation system so  some of them extensively rely on this in upcoming opportunities in life due to lack of skills. Like seats in the colleges are reserved, 50% of the government jobs are reserved as well. So...
