Seeking Justice through Social Media - Why is it effective?


On Aug 5, 2017, a young Indian girl Varnika Kundu, a resident of Chandigarh was stalked and followed by two men when she was on her way from work to home at late night. She shared her horrifying bullying incident on her Facebook post and seeked justice. Soon her Facebook post became viral and her voice was soon heard by the court. Here social media really helped her a lot in raising her voice and many people around the country supported her. This is one of many examples where people switched to social media to get Justice.

There have been many social media campaigns that played a crucial role in raising awareness of social issues. #IStandWithAhmed, #Nirbhaya, #ParisAttack have been some of the popular compaigns that came to light.

There is no doubt that in some recent years social media has increased it reaches around the globe, it has certainly helped common people to provide a platform where they are heard and their opinion matters. It is due to these reasons that even people with higher status in the society turn towards social media whenever they find injustice being done. Whether it be showing solidarity towards Paris Attacks or praying for 276 missing Nigerian Girls, people stood up on social media to show their concern and support.
