What's next for Gurmeet Ram Rahim?

Gurmeet Ram Rahim was the former head of the organization Dera Saccha Sauda. He was sentenced an imprisonment of 20 years on 28 August 2017 after being proven guilty post CBI special verdict 2 days on 25th August for a rape case of 2002. The allegations were made to the then Prime Minister of India by two of his disciples.
Below are the highlights of the this case :

  • An anonymous letter is received by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee stating that two Dera Sadhvi were raped by Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 2002.
  • CBI registers a case of rape and exploitation against the then Dera Head.
  • Many statements were taken by the CBI of the victims and all other people involved in the case.
  • More than 50 thousand dera followers started gathering in Panchkula 2 days before his special CBI verdict.
  • All vehicle movement was restricted in Panchkula and mobile internet services are shutdown for 5 days in Haryana and Punjab.
  • A special CBI verdict on 25th August 2017 pronounced Ram Rahim as guilty in Panchkula (Haryana) CBI court and takes him into judicial custody. 
  • This made the followers upset and go rage. Many cars and buses were burned and a lot of damage was done to both public and government property. Around 38 people got killed in this violence and more than 200 people go injured which included both the followers and policemen.


  • The Dera Saccha Sauda Area in Sirsa is heavily guarded by the Policemen and by CRPF and a curfew was imposed.
  • A special court room was made in the Rohtak Jail ahead of his sentence verdict. CBI judge Jagdeep Singh announced 10 years of imprisonment and Rs 15 lakh fine each in two cases besides giving compensation of Rs 14 lakh to both the victims.
  • The dera chief was given a normal prison and no special VIP treatment was given.
A person with a property of more than 50 crores and a daily income of more than 10 lakh a day is now serving jail sentence where he would earn Rs 40 per day if he performs his duties in Jail. Gurmeet Ram Rahim's case was not only the ne case where the so called 'godman' used his wrong influence of the people and were accused by criminal activities.
These cases reflects that there are many more godmen who indulge in criminal activities and use their 'Good Acts' to curtain over their crimes.
Many devotees are enrolled in the ashrams and deras all over India as they consider these Baba's and Swami's as gods on Earth. An awareness must be made among people to take precautions and stay safe from such people who misuse their influence.
